Springfield, IL…State Representative Dan Caulkins (R-Decatur) released the following statement after the Champaign City Council approved an overreaching executive order to allow the Mayor to potentially ban the sale of gasoline, water, electricity, firearms and to take possession of private property. In addition, the order allows for price controls and rationing of food, clothing and other daily necessities.
“Our Governor and the Illinois Department of Public Health are working diligently to keep us informed on the coronavirus pandemic. We must take the coronavirus containment seriously. However, what gives the City of Champaign the right to potentially ban the sale of gasoline, water, electricity, firearms and even assume the ability to take possession of someone’s private property due to this outbreak? I think it is irresponsible of the city council to take these steps that will further result in spreading panic and fear in the community. I will be asking the Governor and Attorney General to look into this matter further as I think Champaign’s executive order is out of line if not illegal.”
