Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity Announces Closure After Nearly Four Decades of Service

Decatur, IL — Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity announces, after careful consideration and in partnership with Habitat for Humanity International, the decision to formally close operations.

Since its founding in 1987, Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity has been proud to serve the community by building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. Over the years, the organization has helped construct numerous homes, providing safe and affordable housing for local families and leaving a lasting impact throughout the Decatur area.

In November, the organization made the decision to pause operations in order to reassess its long-term viability. Following a thorough review and collaboration with Habitat for Humanity International, it was determined that closing the affiliate is the most responsible path forward.

While this marks the end of the Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity affiliate, Habitat for Humanity’s mission continues across Illinois through a strong network of local organizations. A partner Habitat affiliate will assume responsibility for supporting existing homeowners in the Decatur area, ensuring that current homeowners will continue to receive services without interruption. Plans are also underway to ensure that homes currently under construction are completed through this continued collaboration.

“The Board of Directors is incredibly proud of the impact this organization has made in the community over the past 39 years,” said the Board of Directors of Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity. “We are deeply grateful to the dedicated staff, volunteers, donors, and partners who made this work possible.”

As part of the transition, the organization’s commercial property, including the ReStore and associated buildings, will be offered for sale through an upcoming in-person auction, with additional details to be announced. Items within the facility will be made available through a separate virtual auction.

Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity is thankful for the opportunity to have served the community and remains confident in the continued success of Habitat for Humanity’s mission throughout Illinois.
