HOUSE FIRE ON EAST WILLIAM STREET CONSIDERED SUSPICIOUS

Decatur, IL – January 17th, 2026
     At approximately 11:00 P.M., The Decatur Fire Department responded to reports of a structure
fire in the 3600 block of East William St. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke conditions and
visible flames inside the residence.
     Crews quickly stretched multiple attack lines and began extinguishing the fire. At the same time
the Truck crew performed vertical ventilation. Other crews searched for potential victims. The
fire was rapidly brought under control.
     Extensive overhaul operations were needed due to the damage from the fire. Crews were also
forced to battle the extreme frigid temperatures.
     It was determined that the residence was being renovated, and no occupants were home at the
time of the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Decatur Fire
Department Fire Investigation Bureau. At this time, the cause is believed to be suspicious in
nature.
