Salvation Army Cold Cots Open for Winter Season

With temperatures hovering between 35 and 45 degrees and set to drop in to the 20’s overnight for the next few days, the Salvation Army is opening the Cold Cot program. This program adds additional cots to the Men’s Shelter at the Salvation Army to save lives getting men out of the life threatening cold temperatures. It gives additional support as we have men check in at 5 pm in the evening and offer them supper and a hot shower. The men sleep overnight and leave after breakfast the following day.

The Cold Cots Program typically opens when the temperature is below 35 degrees for several days in a row and then stays open through the winter months until early Spring when the temperature is above 35 degrees for several days in a row. This program typically opens in November (sometimes earlier with Illinois temperatures starting in October) and has stayed open through March and even into April.

This program impacts lives. Each man is invited to participate in our Shelter assistance that helps address individual challenges and help move the men to a life of self-sufficiency. Several of these men join in with our Shelter Program and many of them have found the support they need to move to self-sufficiency. It began with a warm safe night’s sleep.

About The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in London in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. 82 cents of every dollar The Salvation Army spends is used to support those services in 5,000 communities nationwide.
