Deering Backs AFP Call to Stop Pritzker’s “Megaproject” Giveaway

State Rep. Regan Deering
DECATUR, IL — State Representative Regan Deering today praised Americans for Prosperity – Illinois and Deputy State Director Brian Costin for shining a light on what has been called “the most dangerous corporate welfare scheme.”
In a recent Chicago Tribune op-ed, Costin detailed how Gov. JB Pritzker’s allies and legislative leaders are pushing a so-called “megaproject” bill during Veto Session, which would shift billions in taxes onto families, homeowners, and small businesses. The proposal would freeze property tax assessments for wealthy developers for up to 40 years, putting the cost onto others.
“Illinois families are already crushed by the highest property taxes in the nation,” Deering said. “And now the Pritzker administration wants you to pay for a tax break for politically connected developers. It is the same old corruption dressed up as economic development.”
Deering echoed AFP’s call for broad-based reforms that lower taxes for everyone instead of hand-picked corporations and urged her colleagues to reject the “megaproject” scam during this month’s veto session.
“The best path is the simple one. One fair, low tax system for all. We should be lowering costs for working families and small businesses, not enriching billionaires who know the right people in Springfield,” said Deering. “I’ll always stand with taxpayers, not the connected few, and I urge my colleagues to choose reforms that lower property taxes for all, not crony capitalism that rewards insiders.”
