UPDATED: Decatur Police Find Three Stabbing Victims At East Main Street Residence

On August 20, 2025, at approximately 9:47 p.m., the Decatur Police Department responded to a report of an injured person at a residence in the 1900 block of E. Main Street. Upon arrival, officers located three victims suffering from apparent stab wounds. The victims included a 38- year-old female, identified as Dawnette M. Sigmon, and her two children, ages 14 and 16.
All three were transported by ambulance to Decatur Memorial Hospital. Sigmon later succumbed to her injuries. The 14- and 16-year-olds were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released from the hospital.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division processed the scene, conducted multiple interviews, and recovered video surveillance footage from the area.
Preliminary investigation determined Sigmon and Latonian D. Johnson (DOB: 05/11/1975) had been in an on-and-off again dating relationship for approximately five years. Throughout that time, they had an extensive history of domestic violence incidents. At the time of this incident, Johnson was not living at the residence on Main Street.
While Sigmon was in the driveway of the residence, Johnson arrived in a personal vehicle and exited. The two began a verbal argument, prompting the 16-year-old to come outside in an attempt to deescalate the situation. After believing Johnson had left, the 16-year-old and 14-year- old heard another argument outside between their mother and Johnson. This second confrontation escalated into a physical altercation, during which Johnson produced a knife. As the children attempted to help their mother, all three suffered multiple stab wounds. The knife is believed to be taken from Johnson by one of the children as it was recovered on scene. Johnson then fled the scene in his personal vehicle.
Johnson’s vehicle was later found unoccupied near the intersection of 17th and Decatur Street. A search of the area was conducted, but Johnson was not located.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Johnson for First Degree Murder and two counts of Attempted Murder. The Decatur Police Department has requested assistance from the United States Marshal Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force in locating and apprehending Johnson.
This investigation remains active, and detectives continue to follow up on investigative leads. The Decatur Police Department will provide updates as more information becomes available.
