SIU MEDICAL STUDENTS’ RESIDENCY MATCH TO NEXT PHASE OF TRAINING

Medical students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine learned crucial information about their futures on Friday, March 21. The graduating Class of 2025, along with fourth-year students nationwide at other medical schools across the United States, received results from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) revealing their postgraduate training destinations. A total of 71 SIU students secured residency positions. The Main Residency Match included 43,237 total positions nationally.

Among the SIU Class of 2025, 12 students (17%) matched in emergency medicine and 11 (15%) in internal medicine. Seven students (10%) will specialize in family medicine, and six students (8%) matched in the programs for pediatrics and psychiatry.

Four students matched in anesthesiology and in obstetrics-gynecology (6%). Learners also matched in dermatology, general surgery, medicine-pediatrics, preliminary medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, plastic surgery, radiology, preliminary surgery, urology and vascular surgery.

Nineteen students (27%) will begin training at SIU-affiliated programs, and 30 students (42%) will be training in Illinois.

The Class of 2025 gathered with family, friends and faculty at the Edward J. Curtis Memorial Learning Center in Springfield. Jerry Kruse, MD, MSPH, SIU Medicine dean and provost, welcomed them to the festivities and shared memories of his own Match Day.

“My warm congratulations to all of our medical students as you move to the next step of your professional lives,” said Kruse. “Your enthusiasm and curiosity have made us a better organization, and I’m sure you will continue to grow and learn and improve the lives of others at each stage of your careers.”

Haneme Idrizi, MD, associate dean of student affairs and admissions, said, “You need to appreciate this day and remember all the hard work, dedication, resilience and professionalism that got you through medical school. It will serve you well on your journey ahead. No matter where you end up, know that you are well-prepared and your contribution will help to shape the future of medicine.”

Commencement for SIU School of Medicine’s Class of 2025 is May 17 at the UIS Performing Arts Center in Springfield. The new physicians will begin residency training in July.

Springfield Residency Matches

Match results also were announced Friday for SIU’s residency programs at its affiliated hospitals in Springfield – Springfield Memorial Hospital and HSHS St. John’s Hospital. On Friday, 82 first-year positions in Springfield were filled. The first-year residents will join more than 270 senior residents and fellows already in training at SIU programs in Springfield.

Sixteen first-year positions were filled in general internal medicine, 10 in family medicine, eight in general pediatrics and four in obstetrics-gynecology. Fifteen were filled in the seven surgical programs – general surgery (4), orthopedic surgery (3), two each in otolaryngology, plastic surgery and urology, and one in both neurological surgery and vascular surgery (1). Twenty-nine total positions were filled in other specialties: emergency medicine (8), psychiatry (8), neurology (4), radiology (4), dermatology (3) and medicine-psychiatry combined (2).

“We’re thrilled with our match outcomes and excited to welcome the new residents both from SIU and many different medical schools across the country and around the world,” said Careyana Brenham, MD, associate dean for graduate medical education. “Our residents help advance the mission of SIU and enrich our community while providing amazing care to patients through our hospital partnerships.”

SIU also has longstanding affiliated family medicine residency programs in Alton, Carbondale, Decatur and Quincy, each three years in length. Twenty-three first-year family medicine positions have been filled for next year through the NRMP match. These residents will join 48 senior family medicine residents and fellows at SIU’s affiliated hospitals – Alton Memorial Hospital, Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Decatur Memorial Hospital and Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
