DECATUR POLICE RESPOND TO SHOOTING AT RESIDENCE ON E. DAMON AVENUE

On November 18, 2024, at approximately 7:38 p.m., the Decatur Police Department responded to a reported shooting at a residence in the 2000 block of E. Damon Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a 35-year-old male and 66-year-old female inside the residence, both suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported both individuals to Decatur Memorial Hospital. The 66-year-old female sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the 35-year-old male later succumbed to his injuries.

The residence was immediately secured by responding officers to preserve the crime scene. The 66-year-old female, who resides at the property, granted consent to search. Detectives in the Criminal Investigations Division processed the scene, recovering four shell casings and a handgun believed to have been used during the incident. The shell casings matched the caliber of the recovered firearm.

Preliminary investigation, including witness statements and video surveillance footage, revealed that the 66-year-old was at her residence when the 35-year-old male unlawfully entered and remained on the property. A family member of the 66-year-old female arrived at the residence during the incident and encountered the 35-year-old male. As the 35-year-old male made his way into the occupied residence, the family member discharged a handgun multiple times striking him.

Further investigation determined that the 35-year-old male, who was on Mandatory Supervised Release through the Illinois Department of Corrections, had no known association with the residence.

The family member, a 48-year-old male, possesses a valid Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card and an active Illinois Concealed Carry License (CCL). The Decatur Police Department will continue its investigation and consult with the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office for case review upon its conclusion.

This remains an active investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Decatur Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at (217) 424-2734 or Crimestoppers at (217) 423-8477.
