First-Ever U.S. EPA Program to Provide Buses to Four Districts, including Decatur
Today, Alltown Bus Service Inc. (Alltown) announced that four school districts will be receiving 40 electric school buses as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Grant Program. This first-of-its-kinds program was announced this week by the Biden-Harris Administration, with at least $42 million in awards for clean school buses being allocated to three applicants to serve several school districts across Illinois.
Alltown, part of Beacon Mobility, applied under its parent company Van Pool Transportation, and was selected and awarded funding for 40 electric school buses that will operate out of the following four different school districts:
1. City of Chicago School (20 buses)
2. Harvey School District 152 (3 buses)
3. West Harvey-Dixmoor Public School District (2 buses)
4. Decatur School District 61 (15 buses)
“Receiving this award for the first-ever Clean School Bus Program will put 40 electric school buses on the roads in Illinois,” said Max Polan, Vice President of Operations for Alltown Bus. “At Alltown, it is our top priority to service and support our students, drivers and school districts and these buses are an important step to reduce emissions and provide safe and sustainable transportation options for our communities.”
In addition to 40 electric school buses, the award will support infrastructure for charging and updates to bus yards to provide clean energy. Alltown and Beacon Mobility will also work with local communities for workforce development and training for students, teachers and staff.
Polan continued, “We thank our local school districts and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for their partnership and look forward to getting these buses into service. Alltown Bus and Beacon Mobility leadership is committed to expanding our zero-emission fleet to offer safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation options for students, families and schools.”
The Clean School Bus Program was passed as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.These electric school buses will replace diesel school busses and support efforts to transition to low- and zero-emission vehicles. These awards will also help to improve air quality in communities and advance environmental justice, while creating local jobs and supporting the economy.
