The Good Samaritan Inn To Host Annual Empty Bowl Event Nov. 10

The Good Samaritan Inn is hosting its annual Empty Bowl event on Thursday, November 10th with proceeds feeding hungry children and families 365 days a year. This year’s event is sponsored by “Souperhero Samaritan” Stripmasters Services, Inc.
Meals are $10 and include a choice between Chef Rachel Wear’s Beef Brisket Chili (gluten-free), Fire Roasted Veggie Chili (gluten-free, vegan), and Artisan Mac ‘n Cheese as well as cornbread & dessert.
Diners can stay and enjoy music from long-time volunteer and talented artist Tracy D. Osborne and purchase limited-edition 40th Anniversary and 2022 Empty Bowl t-shirts and sweatshirts from Uptopbromedia’s Grant Webber who will do live screen printing at the event. .
Those who prefer to take their meals to-go can easily pick up their order and eat at home. All meals are pre-packaged in microwave-safe containers for quick pick-up and easy storage for leftovers.
A huge draw to the event are $10 ceramic bowls handmade by local artists, with the majority coming from Millikin University’s Art Department. “Our students spend a lot of time and effort crafting these bowls because they are passionate about helping others,” says Jennifer Holt, Assistant Professor of Ceramics & Sculpture. “Students not only further develop their craft, but also learn how to use their artistic skills to positively impact the community.”
“It’s such a fun event for the whole community with new partners and friends getting involved every year,” says Nicky Besser, Executive Director. “Where else can you get a chef-prepared meal for $10 and feed hungry children and families at the same time?”
For 40 years, Good Sam’s Noon Meal has not only nourished but also helped patrons save money they would otherwise spend on food for necessities including rent, childcare, and utilities. “It helps – I have a huge family so my power bill is always high,” says Tonya, who frequents the lunch program. “It helps me pay my phone bill monthly,” adds Branson, another diner.
The Empty Bowl is on Thursday, November 10th, 2022 from 4:30pm-7pm at The Good Samaritan Inn. Community members can pre-order or pay in-person and order for dine-in or to-go. Only pre-orders are guaranteed. Samaritan Partnerships are available with many including free meals and t-shirts, and donations are accepted.
