Maroa Public Library District to Participate in Nationwide Simultaneous Reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8
Maroa, IL — The Maroa Public Library District will join communities across the United States and its territories in a nationwide simultaneous reading of the Declaration of Independence on Wednesday, July 8, in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the document’s first public reading in Philadelphia.
This coordinated national observance will include participants from all 50 states, five U.S. territories, the District of Columbia, and the Minor Outlying Islands. According to the organizing initiative, “Just as the Declaration of Independence was read to the people on July 8, 1776, now, 250 years later, Americans across the country will read the Declaration together.”
Because the United States spans more than 9,500 miles and across multiple time zones, the reading will occur in a coordinated manner so that communities nationwide participate in the same historic moment. Beginning at 6:00 p.m. EDT/5:00 p.m. CST, readings will take place across the country in alignment with local time zones, allowing communities from Maine to Hawaii—and beyond—to take part simultaneously in spirit and timing.
The Maroa Public Library’s program will begin with light refreshments at 4:30 p.m., followed by the reading at 5:00 p.m. at the library. Community members of all ages are invited to attend.
Special guest readers will include Illinois State Senator Sally Turner, Illinois State Representative Regan Deering, and Ken Frye of the Decatur Park District.
“We are pleased to invite our community to take part in this national moment of gathering,” said Library Director Becky Newton. “This is an opportunity for neighbors, families, educators, and civic leaders to come together, share their voices, and participate in a meaningful reading of a foundational document in our nation’s history.”
The event is free and open to the public.
