Public Works flushing hydrants over the next month

Decatur, IL – City of Decatur water services crews will be flushing various fire hydrants around Decatur from May 25 to June 22, 2026. Flushing by Public Works is a routine maintenance process that removes sediment and improves water quality.
Residents can refer to the online map  at the bottom of this article to check if their area is being flushed. Red indicates hydrants that require flushing and green will mean the process is complete. If you notice water crews in your area, please minimize water use until the flushing is complete.
Temporary discoloration of water and a slight drop in water pressure may occur in areas where hydrants are being flushed. There are no safety or health issues associated with discolored water. To clear cloudy or discolored water once flushing is complete, wait approximately 15 minutes before running cold water in the bathtub or outside faucet, then run water through the other faucets. If water is still not clear, wait 30 minutes and repeat the process.
Residents should ensure water runs clear again before doing laundry as clothing could become stained. If a stain occurs, clothing should not be dried as this may set the stain permanently. Rewash clothes with non-chlorine bleach or a rust-removing compound, which can also work on fixtures and sinks.
