Late-Night Fire Displaces Three Residents; Working Smoke Alarms Credited with Saving Lives

On October 11, 2025, at approximately 11:05 p.m., the Decatur Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 1637 N. Union Street. Initial reports indicated that occupants might still be inside the residence.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire showing from two second-floor bedroom windows. The three adult occupants, who had been asleep at the time, were awakened by the home’s working smoke detectors. Thick black smoke and intense heat initially made their escape difficult, but they were ultimately able to exit the structure safely before firefighters arrived.
Fire crews made a rapid and aggressive interior attack, deploying two handlines to bring the fire under control. Extensive overhaul operations were required to locate and extinguish remaining hot spots throughout the affected areas.
The residence sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage, rendering it temporarily uninhabitable. The occupants are being assisted by friends and family.
The Decatur Fire Department Fire Investigation Bureau is investigating the fire to determine its cause and origin.
