Macon County State’s Attorney Issues Statement On Review Of Nov. 18th Fatal Shooting

Macon County State’s Attorney Scott A. Rueter has issued the following statement after reviewing Nov. 18th fatal shooting in Decatur:
“As State’s Attorney, I have been asked to review the tragic events surrounding the shooting of November 18, 2024, to determine if charges should be filed against any of the involved individuals. I have reviewed the investigative reports submitted by the Decatur Police Department, and most importantly, the first hand evidence of the surveillance cameras from the home at the scene of the shooting and the contemporaneously made 911 call recordings.
“Based on the review of those materials, and discussions with the Decatur Police Department, I have determined that no charges will be filed.
“I would remind the public that although Illinois allows for defense of self, others, and in some instances, property, your actions in such a situation will be reviewed by agencies, prosecutors and possibly jurors with the view of 20/20 hindsight. I always advise that the best reaction, if possible, is to remove yourself and loved ones from the situation and summon law enforcement to do their job. Lives should not be squandered over mere property. I know also, such a course of action is not always possible, but where possible, it is the safest.”
