TWO MEN SHOT IN TRAFFIC INCIDENT ON NORTH OAKLAND AVENUE
On October 15, 2023, at approximately 6:57 p.m., the Decatur Police Department responded to the 2000 block of N. Oakland Avenue regarding the report of two gunshot victims. Upon arrival, officers located a 20-year-old male and 22-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital by ambulance for medical care.
Based on information obtained thus far, the two victims had just left a church function together when they were nearly involved in a motor vehicle accident with the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle then paralleled them as they traveled south on Oakland Avenue from W. McKinley Avenue. As the vehicles entered the 2000 block of N. Oakland Avenue, the driver of the suspect vehicle produced a firearm and shot multiple times into the vehicle the victims were traveling in. As a result, both victims sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Officers closed the 2000 block of N. Oakland Avenue to preserve evidence. Detectives with the Decatur Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division responded to interview witnesses and process the crime scene. Multiple shell casings were located in the roadway.
This investigation is ongoing, and the Decatur Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance.
