MAC ON SPORTS: LANPHIER LATEST HIGH SCHOOL TEAM HIT BY COVID

J. Thomas McNamara

Lanphier canceled tonight’s (Friday) football game against Normal University High and next week’s contest against Jacksonville because of COVID-19 protocols.

Five students at Lanphier tested positive for the coronavirus, which includes four on the football team, according to a news release from Springfield School District 186.

“This decision was made in collaboration with Sangamon County Department of Public Health,” Hankins said in the release. “All five students were asymptomatic at the time of testing.”

The school district has had 34 positive cases all together in the last seven days,

Spokesperson Hankins added that the vaccinated individuals on the football team who are asymptomatic may continue to attend school and the football coaches “will determine how they will proceed with practices based on the number of unaffected athletes.”

I will have more on this developing story in a future print edition of the Decatur Tribune. MacArthur is finishing the first of its two week pause.
