Stephen Decatur Runnin’ Reds basketball standout, Larry Phillips, passed away recently in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

The 72-year-old Phillips was a member of the 1964 third place Runnin’ Reds and fourth place 1966 team.

He didn’t score in the ’64 state tournament, but in the ’66 event he totaled 21 in the four games the Reds played. Rich Smith led that team in tournament scoring with 58 and Terry Johnson 54. Jack Moore, Jim Cook, Larry Downs, Don Roberts, Larry Moffett, Larry Beasley, and Dennis Hippe were members of that team.

Jack Sunderlik and the late Dave Scholz were on that ’64 team with Sunderlik making the all-tournament team and led the way with 83 points. Scholz had 52, Charles Currie had 44.
