MAC ON SPORTS: ARGENTA NAMES NEW GRID COACH

J. Thomas McNamara
Michael DeMeio is the new Argenta-Oreana football head coach where he will succeed Steve Kirk, who resigned prior to last season to become defensive coordinator at Monticello. However, his resignation was not announced until the end of the Bombers season.
Kirk is expected to succeed when Cully Welter as the Sages head coach when Welter decides to retire. Monticello athletic director Dan Sheehan and Kirk are close and worked closely together when Sheehan served as the Bombers athletic director.
DeMeio comes from MacArthur where he has been assisting Generals head coach Derek Spates, and with experience assisting Patrick Etherton at Mount Zion.
The Argenta-Oreana school board approved the administration’s recommendation at Monday night’s (Feb. 10) board meeting.
He is a Millikin graduate.
Athletics Director Michael Williams said, “We are very pleased to have Michael on board. He is a high energy, high character guy that we feel will continue to build on past success and to move our program forward.”
I will have more on this developing story in a future print edition of the Decatur Tribune.
