The Redbox Bowl was going to be Illinois’ bowl site ever since its representatives were seen in the press box at Hawkeye Stadium three weeks ago when Iowa beat the Illini.
They certainly weren’t there to see Kirk Ferentz’s Hawkeyes, who were headed to a higher level game. The Hawkeyes are headed to the Holiday Bowl.
Illinois and California tee it up at 3 p.m. Dec. 30 in Santa Clara in the same stadium that the San Francisco 49ers play. The Illini are going bowling for the first time since 2011. Fox will telecast the game.

The Illini are one of nine Big Ten teams to play in this year’s myriad of bowls, including Ohio State, who will play Clemson in one of the Football Playoff semifinals with LSU and Oklahoma playing in the other.
Wisconsin plays Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
Jacardia Wright and his Kansas State Wildcats will play Navy in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, TN. on Dec. 27.

Shaq Bond and the Utah State Aggies play Kent State Dec. 20 in the Frisco Bowl in Frisco, TX.
I will have more on this developing story in a future print edition of the Decatur Tribune.
