St. Teresa’s Abby Robinson and Lexi Huck embrace after victory.

By J. Thomas McNamara

Normal–St. Teresa is Decatur and Macon County’s first-ever state volleyball champion after defeating Breese Mater Dei in two sets Saturday afternoon for the Illinois High School Association’s Class 2A tournament. Brad Dalton and his lady Bulldogs defeated Breese Mater Dei, 25-22 and 26-24. As a result, their legacy is firmly etched in not only the school’s volleyball history books, but also in the entire city and Macon County.

Last year Lexi Huck, Abby Robinson, Grace Buxton, Valerie Nutakor, Addison Newbon, along with three graduated seniors and their teammates, placed third in Class 1A which at the time was the school’s best-ever finish as St. Teresa twice previously had finished fourth when Lexi’s older sister, Courtney, played. Maroa-Forsyth’s outstanding 2007-08 team placed third, but no one had played in a state championship game until St. Teresa last weekend in Redbird Arena on the Illinois State University campus in Normal.
