Decatur, IL (September 30, 2019) Workforce Investment Solutions has been awarded a $1.3 million grant to assist with providing disaster relief employment to alleviate the effects of the opioid crisis in Macon County. The funding will allow Workforce Investment Solutions to collaborate with Crossing Healthcare, and other area agencies, to provide employment and training activities, including supportive services, to address economic and workforce impacts related to widespread use, addiction, and overdose.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced an Opioid –Crisis Dislocated Worker Grant to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for $5,600,000. This announcement comes as a result of the October 2017 declaration by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that the opioid crisis a national public health emergency.
“This funding opportunity will support our valued collaboration with Crossing Healthcare and will provide a unique opportunity to address barriers to job skills training and stable employment. Workforce Investment Solutions will create temporary disaster-relief employment by providing job training and temporary jobs to patients and family members participating in programming through Crossing Healthcare and Crossing Recovery Center. Jobs will be available on the Crossing Healthcare campus as well as throughout the community,” said Rocki Wilkerson, executive director, Workforce Investment Solutions.
Tanya Andricks, chief executive officer, Crossing Healthcare, states, “Traditional treatment programs focus primarily on the psychosocial impacts of substance use disorders, however, we know without the ability to provide food and shelter for yourself and family, it is difficult to maintain sobriety. This makes employment a key component to treatment.”
The grant award will begin November 1st 2019.
