Any athletic event coordinator has to be a fund-raiser first in order to keep his tournament afloat in these difficult financial times. The Decatur Thanksgiving Tournament is less than four months away from celebrating its 50th anniversary, and is blessed to have one. Tournament coordinator Mel Roustio came up with another brilliant idea that took the involvement of many to pull off.
First, Superintendent Dr. Paul Fregeau had to sign off as did assistant superintendent Dr. Fred Bouchard. Designer Kim Halusan was responsible for laying out the instrument from pictures I provided as well as those the Decatur Herald and Review allowed Halusan to use. Dr. Fregeau wrote Chris Coates, who referred her to Allison Petty, for permission for the district to use from the ones Halusan wanted to use.
As a result, Roustio has the “Feasting on a 50-Year Decatur Tradition,” calendars on the press now. They include pictures of many of the Division 1 players, who have competed here through these years. Of course, Andre Iguodala and others from Springfield Lanphier are included as is his former Golden State teammate, Shaun Livingston of Peoria Central. Photos of Mount Zion, Decatur Eisenhower, Decatur MacArthur, Decatur St. Teresa, Bolingbrook, Peoria Central, Mattoon, Robinson, Collinsville, Harvey Thornton, Bartonville Limestone, Joliet Township, Champaign Central, Champaign Centennial, Springfield High and Springfield Southeast players are included.
