Last Friday night was a great time to be in Macon when the Meridian district honored its 2009 Hawks state championship boys basketball team, the majority of whom returned for the celebration which brought smiles from them, their family and friends, who gathered in the cafetorium for the reception and later in the gym for their introductions to the crowd before the varsity game.
“Where has the time gone?” was the common phrase heard from the returning players, coaches, administrators, managers, parents and fans. Shelbyville wasn’t the perfect guest as it spoiled the evening with its win over Jay Driscoll and his Hawks.
With all his duties for pre-junior varsity and varsity, Driscoll made sure he stopped by early to exchange pleasantries with Jack Blickensderfer, who coached the Hawks to that 2009 state championship which happens to be the last one either a Decatur or Macon County school has won, although St. Teresa came close with its runnerup in 2015. Driscoll succeeded the legendary Blickensderfer.
